Funding Community

The application for 2024 Community Fund Grants is now closed. This page will be updated with awardees after March 1, 2024.

Where does the money go?

Money donated by our generous flag hosts during flag campaigns goes into our Community Fund to finance projects and events that promote LGBTQ+ acceptance and support in Utah. Any individual, group, or organization can apply for grants ranging from $100-$7,000. Applications are accepted in December each year, with grantees selected and awards distributed in February of the next year.

Since 2018, Project Rainbow has donated over $250,00 to support projects and events throughout Utah.

“Our event was a GIANT success!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. It was "A Night for All Families" hosted by the LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee for the Provo City School District. We had 275 attendees and many more that wished they could attend, but had conflicts. It was hours of fun, with so many families, and so many district employees who were pleasantly surprised at the turnout.”

“With the Project Rainbow grant we were able to purchase live-stream equipment that allowed us to broadcast LGBTQ events in real-time. Our new, digital equipment allowed us to promote local LGBTQ events to a world-wide audience.”

-Latter Gay Stories

“With the grant funding from Project Rainbow Utah, we were able to collect 38 oral histories from individuals in Northern Utah. Many of the interviewees have remarked about how they are so glad that we are doing this and collecting queer history. They want to do their part to make sure that people in the future understand the history of being queer in Weber and Davis Counties and the struggles that many have gone through. For us, it has helped build a community of allies and LGBTQ+ members that have worked together to shine a light on the importance of sharing everyone’s story and not erasing anyone from history.”

-Weber State University Special Collections

“Climbing has historically been an exclusive sport due to cultural barriers, lack of access, and high cost levels for marginalized climbers. For example, climbing shoes and harnesses can range from $75 to $100 dollars (sometimes upwards of $200 for more expensive shoes and harnesses), and a climbing membership can range from $60 to $100 monthly, depending upon the facilities. The PRU grant allowed SLAQC to purchase multiple day passes for queer+bipoc members of our climbing community who are unable to afford gym memberships, day passes (generally in the realm of $20 for one day pass), and/or climbing gear.”

-Salt Lake Area Queer Climbers

“The grant from Project Rainbow was utilized to create and cultivate a safe space for queer Latinx individuals who belong to the Salt Lake and Ogden area of Utah. This sort of visibility encourages viewers to develop a “both/and'' perspective that requires the LGBTQ+ community as well as the Latinx community to hold these two identities together. This space also addresses the lack of inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community of Utah by adding Latinx culture and heritage to a white centered and colonized view of queerness.”
